A Sunrise Tradition

Since Hammonasset State Park is open to dogs—and largely empty—from November to April, I've ended up making a habit of going there for sunrises in the late fall and winter, when the sunrise happens at a relatively friendly time of morning.

It lets me take pictures of the dogs and the landscape during the Golden Hour, the time before sunset or after sunrise when the natural light is particularly warm, diffuse, and friendly to photography.

But the moment of sunrise itself—6:55 or so on this particular day—offers a chance to shoot some beautiful colors out across the water.
